Got a call from a guy over near Bart's Books in Ojai. He had a 2003 Grand Caravan that wouldn't start, and he was pretty sure the key was the problem because it had been getting flaky for a week. Turn it, nothing. Turn it again, fires right up. Then one morning it just quit altogether.
I pulled up and he handed me the key. The blade was original, worn smooth on the edges, and the plastic head had a hairline crack running right through the transponder housing. The PCF7935 chip inside was still intact, but the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder was barely reading it because the chip had shifted position inside that cracked shell.
Cut a fresh MIT16-PT blank on my Condor XC-Mini, cloned the transponder value over with the VVDI Key Tool, and had him turning the engine over in about fifteen minutes. Did three start-stop cycles, confirmed the SKIS light on the dash went through its normal sequence: solid for three seconds on key-on, then off. That's how you know the immobilizer accepted the chip.
He said he'd been calling the dealer earlier that week and they quoted him a wait of four to five days just to get the blank in. I was parked at the curb, done before his coffee got cold. He kept the old key as a backup for the doors.
