I got the call on a Tuesday night from a parking lot off a side street in San Roque. A woman who worked nights had finished a long shift and came out to her 2011 Grand Caravan to nothing. The fob wouldn't respond, the sliding doors wouldn't respond, and when she tried the blade override on the driver door, she got in but the van wouldn't start. She had one key. That was it.

The cell was making just enough contact to show a voltage but not enough to give the fob a clean signal. Classic partial-contact situation. I reset the clip, reseated the battery correctly, and the fob lit right up.
But the van still wouldn't start.
That's when I connected my diagnostic tool. The fob was fine. The issue was that the vehicle's immobilizer had flagged a mismatch after too many failed start attempts with that weak-contact fob. It needed a re-sync. I cleared it through the OBD port and ran a fresh pairing sequence. The van started on the next attempt.
She stood there for a second, then said something like, "That's it?" I told her that was it.
I also strongly encouraged her to get a spare made while she was right there, before the next time something like this happens, especially on a single-key vehicle. She took the advice. Smart.
The dealer in Santa Barbara would have had her waiting for an appointment, probably towed, and it would have cost her a lot more. She was home before midnight.
