1997 Dodge Grand Caravan
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

1997 Dodge Grand Caravan Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy up in the Hillsides neighborhood in Ventura, late on a weekday.

He had a 1997 Grand Caravan, his only key, and it had been through enough years of use that it was starting to misread in the ignition - sometimes catching, sometimes not, depending on exactly how he held it going in. Not broken yet, but close. He wanted a spare made before it became an emergency.

He had already stopped at a chain hardware store. Their copy worked in the door but would not turn the ignition. That happens more than people expect. A worn key gets copied with the wear baked in, and an already-marginal cut gets worse.

I pulled up to his place with my code cutter and the right blank for this van. The thing about a 1997 on this platform is the key code can sometimes be retrieved through the door lock cylinder if you know what you are doing, which means you are cutting from spec rather than guessing from a worn original. I decoded the lock, pulled the code, and cut two fresh keys to that exact spec.

Both turned the ignition clean on the first try. He held the worn original next to the new one and you could see the difference - the peaks on the old one had rounded off enough that it was a small surprise it still worked at all.

He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted him for a single key, got two, and did not have to drive anywhere or wait.
