Got a call from a home care worker over near Rose Shopping Center in Oxnard. Her 1996 Intrepid was sitting in the carport and the remote had gone completely dead. No lock chirp, no unlock, nothing. She was already pulling up tow truck numbers and rearranging her patient visits for the morning.
I told her to hold off on all that. A 1996 Intrepid doesn't have an immobilizer. The remote is just for convenience. The car will start with the plain mechanical key no matter what.

I came out anyway because the remote still needed fixing. Popped open the GQ43VT7T, and the CR2016 inside was corroded along one contact. Not just dead, but leaking slightly. Cleaned the board contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2016, and reprogrammed the remote to the body controller. Lock, unlock, panic, all three buttons confirmed from about 30 feet.
The whole thing took maybe 15 minutes in her carport. She had already called a dealer and they told her to bring it in and leave it for a diagnosis appointment that was a week out. For a battery and a reprogram on a remote with no transponder. She just sort of shook her head when I handed it back working.
Saved her a trip she never needed to make.
