Over near Pacific View Mall in Ventura, a home care worker's morning went sideways before her first patient visit. Her only key for her 2004 Dodge Durango just stopped turning the engine over. Cranked fine, no start. The little key icon on the dash was blinking at her.

Turned out her transponder chip had just gone dead. The remote buttons on the OHT692427AA head still locked and unlocked fine, which made it confusing for her. She figured if the buttons worked, the key was good.
That is a common miss. The remote signal and the transponder are two separate systems. One talks to the receiver module for locks. The other talks to the SKIM sitting on the ignition cylinder for engine authorization. One can fail while the other keeps working like nothing happened.
I cut a new blade to code, programmed the replacement transponder to her SKIM, and tested it through three full start cycles. She watched the key icon on the dash go from blinking to solid to off, which is exactly the sequence you want.
