Over on The Avenue in Ventura, I got a call from a guy who had been driving his 2004 Durango on a single working key for about two years. He kept meaning to get a spare cut. Then that one key stopped unlocking the doors remotely, and a week later the truck wouldn't start at all.
He figured it was related. It wasn't, not directly. The remote had just hit a dead battery. The no-start was something else.
I pulled up and he handed me the key head first, almost embarrassed. CR2032 was completely flat. Swapped it right there, doors responded immediately. That part took maybe four minutes.
The no-start was the other half of the job. The transponder had lost communication with the immobilizer, which happens on these when the key has been used hard and the chip has seen some wear. I connected my programmer to the OBD port, ran the relearn for the transponder to the vehicle, and verified both functions end to end before I packed up.
He stood there for a second after it fired on the first try, then said he should have called two years ago and gotten that spare made. He wasn't wrong. Coming out to The Avenue, doing it in the carport, cost him a fraction of what the dealer would have wanted. And he left with the spare he'd been putting off.
