2001 Dodge Durango
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Durango to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment can handle all-keys-lost right where the vehicle is parked. Dealers often default to requiring the vehicle in their bay, and then you're paying for a tow on top of an already higher key cost, plus waiting for an appointment. On a 2001 Durango, the job can be done on your driveway or wherever the truck sits.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2001 Durango?

Usually 30 to 45 minutes on site. PIN retrieval, cutting the blade, and programming the transponder all happen in the same visit. Compare that to the dealer path: schedule an appointment, possibly wait days, tow the vehicle in, wait for parts if they don't have the blank in stock. One key, done in your driveway, same day you call. That's the difference.

Q: My 2001 Durango cranks but won't start. Could the transponder key be the problem?

It can be, and it's one of the first things worth ruling out. On a vehicle with a transponder system like the 2001 Durango, if the immobilizer doesn't read the chip in the key, the engine cranks but fuel delivery gets cut. The truck turns over, sounds like it wants to start, but dies immediately or never fires at all.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online for my 2001 Durango. Can I just get it cut, or does it need programming too?

It needs both. Cutting the blade gets you into the door and turns the ignition, but the truck won't run without the transponder chip in that key being programmed to match the vehicle's immobilizer. A correctly cut but unprogrammed key will crank the engine and go nowhere.

2001 Dodge Durango Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Casitas Springs, a guy waved me down while I was wrapping up another call on the edge of town. He had a 2001 Dodge Durango sitting in his driveway and one key to his name. He'd been meaning to get a spare cut for about two years. Life gets busy.

He handed me the original key. I checked it over, confirmed the transponder key type, and got to work. Cut a new key blade to match the vehicle, then ran the programming sequence to enroll it with the immobilizer. Both keys tested in the ignition. Both started the truck without hesitation.

The whole thing happened in his driveway while he drank a cup of coffee on the porch. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a figure that made him put it off, which is how it became a two-year project. My number was a fraction of that, and I came to him.

That's the job. Simple when you do it before something goes wrong.

Dodge Durango Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2001 Dodge Durango. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2001 Durango is doable on site. The process involves retrieving the PIN code tied to your vehicle's immobilizer, cutting a new key blade to the vehicle, and programming the transponder so the system recognizes it. Because you're starting from zero, all previously cut keys get cleared out of the system as part of the process, which is also a security benefit if you lost the key somewhere it could be found.
