Got a call from a guy in Grant Park, Ventura, on a Tuesday afternoon. He had a 1998 Dodge Durango sitting in his driveway with one key left, and the plastic head on that key was cracked down the middle. The transponder chip inside was barely held in place by a sliver of housing. He had been nursing it for weeks, holding the two halves together every time he started the truck.
He asked me if I could just glue it. I told him I could, but the moment that chip shifts even slightly out of alignment with the SKIM antenna ring around the ignition cylinder, the truck reads it as no key present. Cranks, fires for a second, dies. The security lamp stays lit. That is not a problem you want to discover at a gas station.
I cut a new key by code using the VIN and the original Chrysler key code lookup. Then I cloned the transponder signal from his cracked key onto a fresh PCF7935 chip in a new housing. No need to touch the SKIM module at all with a clone. Tested it cold, truck fired right up, security light went out after the bulb check like it should.
He turned both halves of the old key over in his hand, looked at the new one, and just put the old pieces in his pocket. Sentimental, I guess.
Whole thing took about 25 minutes in his driveway. A dealer would have wanted him to tow it in and wait days for a parts-counter key order.
