2004 Jeep Liberty
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

The programming doesn't wear out. Once the transponder is enrolled to the vehicle, it stays enrolled. What actually fails over time on these is the physical key: the plastic head cracks, the key blade wears enough to cause ignition cylinder drag, or the chip shifts inside a cheap housing. Use a quality key, don't use it as a bottle opener, and it should last as long as you own the truck.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. Every key we make is covered under our warranty. That said, if a properly programmed transponder key suddenly stops starting the vehicle, the first thing to check is whether the key head took a hard knock. The transponder chip inside sits in a fixed position, and if the housing cracked or the chip shifted, the immobilizer antenna in the ignition collar may not be reading it reliably.

Q: I still have one working key. Can I program a second key myself at home?

On the 2004 Liberty, yes, there is an onboard relearn sequence you can attempt using your existing working key. It involves a specific series of ignition switch movements timed within a set window. It doesn't require any tools or the OBD port. The catch is that it has to be done precisely, and if the sequence fails partway through you generally have to wait a set lockout period before trying again.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2004 Liberty. Is all-keys-lost more expensive or complicated?

It's a different process than adding a spare when you have a working key. Without any recognized key present, the onboard relearn option isn't available. I use diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port to clear the existing key memory and enroll the new key from scratch. The immobilizer has no record of any key at that point, so the new key becomes the first enrolled key. Takes a bit longer than a same-key-present job, but it's a standard call.

2004 Jeep Liberty Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy came through Downtown Ojai one afternoon with a 2004 Liberty and a key that looked perfectly fine. Cut right, turned fine, cranked the engine. But it would fire for a second and die every single time. He had already been to a shop that told him it was a fuel pump issue and quoted him accordingly.

I asked him one question: where did that key come from. Turns out he had bought a cut key at a swap meet a few months back and assumed it was good to go because it fit the lock. Nobody had ever programmed the transponder chip inside it to the vehicle.

Pulled up to him in the Vons parking lot just off Ojai Avenue, connected my equipment, and enrolled the key to his Liberty right there. Engine started and held on the first try. He sat there for a second kind of processing the fact that he had nearly paid for a fuel pump that had nothing wrong with it.

The dealer was an afterthought in that conversation. He just wanted to drive home.

Jeep Liberty Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on a 2004 Jeep Liberty?▼

We use quality aftermarket blanks cut and programmed to match your specific vehicle. For a 2004 Liberty, the key is a transponder turn key, so what matters is that the blank carries the correct transponder chip type for that generation of Jeep immobilizer and that the blade is cut accurately to your lock. When those two things are right, the vehicle accepts the key the same way it would accept a dealer-sourced key.
