Got a call around midnight from an X-ray tech finishing a shift at the urgent care clinic near Campus Hills area in Moorpark. Her 2008 Jeep Wrangler wouldn't turn over. She'd twist the key and the dash would light up, but the engine wouldn't crank. The red dot security light just sat there, solid.
Not the battery. The transponder chip in her OHT692427AA remote head key had dropped communication with the WIN module. The immobilizer was doing exactly what it was designed to do: refusing to start for a key it couldn't verify.
I met her in the clinic lot before 1 AM. Connected my Smart Pro to the OBD-II port under the dash, pulled up the Chrysler key learning sequence, and ran the security access routine. Her Wrangler needed the timed PIN extraction since she didn't have the original dealer PIN from the key tag. That part takes a few minutes of patience while the tool talks to the WIN module. Once I had access, I programmed the new remote head key, cut the Y160 blade to match, and tested ignition, lock, unlock, panic, and remote start.
She sat in the passenger seat watching the whole thing. When it fired up clean, she just leaned back and closed her eyes for a second. Long shift.
She drove home about 35 minutes after I pulled in. The dealer couldn't have touched it until Friday, and for a good chunk more.
