Up in the Riviera in Santa Barbara, I got a call from a guy who had been fighting his 1999 Jeep Wrangler for about two weeks. The key was getting harder to turn every day. He'd been jiggling it, pulling up on the steering column, doing the whole ritual. Then one morning it just stopped turning at all.
He called the dealer first. They told him he needed a new ignition cylinder, a new key, and programming. The quote was enough to make him pause, which is when he went looking for another option and found me.
When I got there and pulled the cylinder, the wear pattern was obvious. The wafers inside had rounded off from years of use and, sure enough, there was a heavy set of keys hanging off the ring. The cylinder itself wasn't dead, just tired.
I decoded the existing lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Then I programmed the transponder chip so the immobilizer would accept it. Tested the start, tested it again, and let him watch the whole thing from his driveway.
He asked me what it would have cost at the dealer. I told him to count what he saved and put it toward a lighter keychain.
