Got a call from a guy up in the Riviera neighborhood in Santa Barbara. His 1999 Jeep Wrangler had been sitting in the driveway for three days because the ignition wouldn't turn past accessory. He told me he'd been fighting it for a while, wiggling the key, pushing the steering wheel, doing the whole routine people learn when the cylinder starts going.
He'd called the Jeep dealer already. They wanted the vehicle towed in, quoted him for a full ignition cylinder replacement with a new transponder key and SKIM reprogram, and told him it would be a few days once they got it. He works out of his truck, so losing the Wrangler that long wasn't going to fly.
I drove up and checked the Y159 cylinder. The wafers were worn down, which is the usual story on these TJ Wranglers with 20-plus years of use. The cylinder housing was fine. I read the SKIM data through the diagnostic port with my ACDP as a backup before pulling anything apart. Decoded the lock, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a fresh Y160-PT transponder key matched to the repaired cylinder. Programmed the PCF7935 chip to the SKIM module, tested the start, and ran it twice cold to make sure.
He watched the whole thing from his front steps. When the engine turned over clean, he just nodded and said "that's all it was." Took about 40 minutes. He kept his original cylinder, saved a good chunk over the dealer quote, and drove to a job site that afternoon.
