Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Jeep Wranglers?

The 2021 Wrangler's security system authenticates through the vehicle's CAN network, and the fob has to match the correct frequency and internal electronics for that pairing to hold. We use verified blanks built to match the factory fob spec for this vehicle, including the correct battery type and internal board configuration. Aftermarket shells that look right on the outside sometimes have tolerance issues where the emergency blade seats, or the board doesn't communicate cleanly on the first pairing attempt. We've seen that play out on jobs. Quality matters on the hardware side before programming even starts.

How long does a replacement smart key last on a 2021 Wrangler?

The programming doesn't expire or wear out. A correctly registered fob stays paired until someone with the right equipment removes it from the vehicle's memory. Battery life on a CR2450 typically runs one to two years depending on how often you're using passive entry. The physical shell takes more wear on a Wrangler than on most vehicles just by nature of how they get used. Off-road days mean the fob is bouncing around, getting dusty, taking drops. We use housings that hold up to that. If a button starts going soft or the shell cracks, that's a shell issue, not a programming issue, and that's a much cheaper fix than starting over.

My new Wrangler key stopped working a few weeks after I got it. What's going on?

That said, when a properly programmed JL Wrangler key fails early, the fob itself is rarely the problem. JL owners on forums have documented key-not-detected warnings tied to low vehicle battery voltage. The JL's electrical system is sensitive to voltage drop, and if the main battery is weak, the proximity system can behave erratically before anything else shows symptoms. Check the vehicle battery. Also worth checking: if the vehicle has the stop-start system, that setup puts extra cycle load on the battery and owners report it degrades faster than expected under regular use.

If it's none of that, we'll troubleshoot it. We don't just hand you another fob and call it done.

Can I use the emergency blade inside the fob to start the car if the fob stops working?

The emergency blade unlocks the door, not the ignition. The 2021 Wrangler doesn't have a traditional ignition cylinder that the blade turns to start. It has a push-button start system. The blade gets you inside the vehicle when the door handles won't respond, which matters a lot at 7am in a daycare parking lot. Once you're in, if the fob battery is just low, hold the fob directly against the start button and press. There's a short-range reader built into the button housing for exactly this. If that doesn't work either, you're past a battery issue and need a tech.

My door handles stopped doing the touch-unlock thing but the start button still recognizes the key. Are they on the same system?

They're not. Passive entry through the door handle and start-button recognition run through different readers. The handle sensors on JL Wranglers are a known wear point, especially on vehicles that see trail use or frequent hand washing near the handles. Mud and water intrusion around the capacitive strip on the handle can degrade that sensor while the rest of the keyless system keeps working normally.

If both front handles quit at the same time, that leans toward a module or power supply issue. If it's just one door, start with the handle itself. Either way, the fob is almost certainly fine if the push-button start is still seeing it without any issue.
