1997 Jeep Wrangler
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Jeep to the dealer?

Not for a 1997 Wrangler. Dealers sometimes talk like every key job requires the vehicle in the bay, but that's not the reality here. This is a mechanical key. I come to you, work off the lock or the ignition cylinder, and cut a replacement on site. The tow is the expensive part of the dealer route, and it's also the part that's completely unnecessary on a vehicle like this.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I confirm the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker to match it to the key specs before I cut anything. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, but done on site in a few minutes. Jeep forums are full of people who showed up to a dealership without their paperwork and got turned away. Bring both and there's no delay.

Q: My ignition feels stiff and the key is hard to turn. Is the cylinder worn out or is it the key?

On a 1997 Wrangler that's seen regular use, it's worth checking the key first. A worn or copied-from-a-copy key can be just slightly off on the cut depths, and that throws extra friction into every turn. Over time owners also report the ignition wafer tumblers wearing unevenly, which makes a correct key feel stiff too. Before assuming the cylinder needs replacing, have the key inspected and compare it against the actual lock code.

Q: Can I get a key made from the VIN if I have zero keys left?

Yes. The key code for a 1997 Wrangler can be retrieved through proper locksmith channels using the VIN. I verify ownership first, pull the code, and cut the key to spec. It's one of the advantages of an older mechanical system: no all-keys-lost reset, no timed countdown, no module relearn. The VIN lookup and the cut is the whole job.

1997 Jeep Wrangler Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Madera neighborhood of Simi Valley, I got a call from a guy who'd been using the same worn key on his 1997 Wrangler for years. The cuts were so rounded down that some mornings it would start, some mornings it wouldn't, and he'd been jiggling it for so long he thought the ignition cylinder was going out.

He wasn't wrong to worry. But the cylinder wasn't the problem.

I decoded the key at the door lock, confirmed the original cut depth, and had a fresh blade cut on site in a few minutes. He turned it over on the first try and just sat there for a second. Hadn't felt that in a while.

The dealer had told him over the phone that they'd need the Jeep brought in, which meant arranging a ride and burning half a day. For a metal key. I was parked next to him on his street, done before his lunch got cold.

Jeep Wrangler Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. I come directly to wherever your Wrangler is sitting in Simi Valley, Madera included. The 1997 is a mechanical key vehicle, so there's no programming involved and no need to get the Jeep to a shop. I carry key blanks and cutting equipment in the van. As long as I can access the door lock or ignition cylinder to decode the original cut, I can have a working key made right there.
