Second, ask for a firm price over the phone for your specific vehicle. A real locksmith will ask your year, model, whether it's push-button start or turn-key, and how many working keys you already have. That last detail matters because all-keys-lost is a different job than adding a spare. If the answer is just "we do all cars," that's a problem, especially on a 2022 Wrangler where the security system requires specific gateway authorization tools. Someone without those tools cannot finish the job.

Third, ask for their California BSIS license number. Every locksmith company operating in this state is required to have one. It takes ten seconds to verify.

What actually is a smart key, and how is it different from a regular car key?

Start with the battery. The 2022 Wrangler fob takes a CR2450, and if someone installed a CR2032 by mistake, it physically fits but won't maintain consistent output. Swap in a correct CR2450 and retest. If the warning clears, that was it. If it doesn't, the fob may need to be re-registered, or there's a separate issue with the ignition-side antenna. That's a diagnostic job, not a battery job.
