I got a call from a guy up in Mountclef Ridge, Simi Valley. He had a 1996 Wrangler sitting in his driveway, and his only key had snapped -- half in the ignition, half in his hand. Not a great morning.
He'd already called around. One shop told him they'd need to pull the ignition cylinder and send it out. The dealer said bring it in, which meant a tow since it wasn't going anywhere with half a key stuck in the barrel.
I drove out to him. Got the broken piece out of the cylinder with a broken key extractor, decoded the cut right off the lock, and had a new key blank cut on my machine in the van. Tested it in the ignition, the doors, and the rear. Everything worked first try.
He asked me at least twice if there was going to be a programming step or if he needed to do anything after. Nope. 1996 is old enough that the key is purely mechanical. Cut it right, and it works. That's the whole job.
He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route and didn't have to pay for a tow on top of it.
