A grove foreman out past Marina West called me about his 2016 Wrangler. He had one key left and was watching it get worse every week. The rubber on the lock button was almost worn through, the case had a hairline crack running up the side, and the blade was starting to stick in the ignition. He knew it was only a matter of time.
He had already called the Jeep dealer. They told him to bring the vehicle in and expect it to be there for a day, possibly two if they needed to order the fob. For a ranch truck that moves people and gear around a working property, a full day out of service during harvest season was not something he could just absorb.
I drove out to the grove. When I pulled up, the Wrangler was parked next to a flatbed with mud still on the doors. He handed me the original key and I could see exactly what had happened to it over the years. The case was cracked in two places, the blade had some wear, and when I opened it up the board itself was still solid. That was the good news.
I transferred the board to a new shell, cut a fresh blade to match his vehicle, and added a second key through the diagnostic port so he had a proper spare for the first time in who knows how long. Tested both at the property gate and at the ignition. Everything worked.
He mentioned the dealer quote on his way back to the flatbed. Saving a good chunk of money was nice, but what really mattered was that the Wrangler never left the property.
