I was parked near Moorpark College when a call came in from the College Area side of town. Guy had a 2003 Wrangler TJ, one key, no spare. He'd been meaning to get a duplicate cut for two years. Then the original snapped. Half in the ignition, half in his hand.
He wasn't locked out exactly. He had the broken half and the Jeep was already parked. But he had nowhere to go and no way to start it.
I drove over. The broken piece came out of the cylinder without much trouble. Then I got to work on a fresh key blank, cut it to match his locks, and went through the transponder programming at the OBD port. The immobilizer saw the new key on the first cycle. He turned the key, it fired right up.
He asked what the dealer would have charged and I told him it would have been a lot more, plus he'd have needed a tow because they don't do mobile. He just nodded. He already knew.
Before I left I asked if he wanted a second key cut and programmed while I was standing there. He did. Smart call after learning that lesson the hard way.
