2003 Jeep Wrangler Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from over by Tierra Rejada Golf Club in Moorpark, late on a weeknight. A travel photographer was staying at an Airbnb between assignments. Her only key for the 2003 Wrangler had stopped working. She turned the ignition and got the classic SKIM rejection: engine cranks, fires for about two seconds, then dies. The security light on the cluster was flashing steady.
She called the dealer first. They told her to tow it in, and they could look at it in a couple of days.
I drove out that same night. Parked behind her TJ in the driveway and got to work. The SKIM ring around the ignition was reading fine, so the issue was the transponder in the key itself. The 4D-64 chip had just given up. Happens with age and heat exposure on these older fixed-chip keys.
I pulled a Y160-PT blank from my stock, cut it to code on the machine in the van, and connected to the OBD-II port to program the new 4D-64 chip through the SKIM module. The whole process took maybe 25 minutes. Key turned, SKIM accepted the transponder, engine stayed running.
She watched the whole thing from the driveway with a cup of coffee. Kept looking at the dash like it might stall again. It did not.
