How Mazda 5 Keys Changed Over the Years
First Generation (CR)
Moderate security with the NATS immobilizer system. Your key is a remote head style with an ID46 PCF7952 transponder chip inside, three buttons, and a standard cut blade. We program it through the OBD-II port under your dash, which means no towing and no waiting at a service counter.
First Generation Facelift (CR)
This is where Mazda bumped the chip to an ID47 and added a PIN code requirement for programming. Same remote head key shape, same three buttons, same CR1620 battery. But the upgraded chip means generic blanks from Amazon usually will not work, and you need a locksmith with the right tools and PIN extraction capability.
Second Generation (CW)
This is where security got serious. Mazda switched to a flip key with a high security blade, an ID47 chip, and Advanced NATS that requires server authentication for programming. The battery also changed to a CR2032. These take longer and cost a bit more, but we handle them on-site with the right server tokens.
Which Key Does Your Mazda 5 Use?
A traditional key with built-in remote buttons. You insert it into the ignition to start the car, and the buttons lock and unlock your doors.
The blade folds into the fob body when not in use. It has a high security cut that requires specialized equipment to duplicate.
Pricing by Generation
Price includes key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing; lockout service runs $95-$125 if you are locked out.
Us vs. the Dealer
Need two keys made at once? We cut and program both on the spot for less than the dealer charges for one.
Common Mazda 5 Key Problems
Transponder Key Failure
The antenna ring around your ignition cylinder corrodes over time, especially on 2006-2010 models. NATS can't read your key's ID46 chip, and the engine won't start. We test the antenna ring first; a $40 repair sometimes saves you $200.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
First check is water damage. The remote head design on 2006-2013 models lets moisture through button seams, shorting the board and killing batteries in days. A fresh CR1620 is cheap; if the board is corroded, we swap your chip into a new shell.
NATS System Lockout
Replaced your car battery and now no keys start the engine. Hits 2011-2015 models. NATS sometimes loses key registration after a power interruption, no DIY fix. We reprogram your existing keys through OBD-II, usually under 30 minutes.
Blade Wear
People think the ignition is failing when the real problem is a worn blade. Standard blades on pre-2014 models wear fast, and high-security blades on 2014-2015 models are harder to duplicate worn. We cut from code, not your old key.
Can You Program a Mazda 5 Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for these years. The NATS immobilizer requires professional OBD-II programming with tools like the Autel IM608 or Xhorse VVDI.
Same situation here. The ID47 chip and PIN code requirement mean you need a professional programmer. No ignition cycle trick will register a new transponder.
The Advanced NATS system with server authentication makes DIY programming impossible. These require Mazda server tokens and specialized equipment to pair a new key.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Mazda 5 (sold as the Mazda Premacy in Japan) was one of the only compact minivans with sliding rear doors. Mazda kept costs down by sharing the NATS immobilizer system across the Mazda 3, Mazda 6, and Mazda 5 platforms. Same security architecture, three very different vehicles.
