The owner of a 2007 Mazda 5 called me from the train station lot off Metrolink. He had already missed one train. The fob had stopped responding overnight, the battery had given out, and when he tried to use the emergency blade in the door cylinder, it turned hard and then just stopped. The cylinder had probably never been used manually. Not once.
He had called the Mazda dealer first. Earliest they could see him was three days out.
I was at the lot in about 35 minutes. Got the door open, checked both fobs through the diagnostic port once I was in. Neither key had dropped out of the system. Both were still registered. The problem was exactly what it looked like: a dead CR2025 and a lock cylinder that had never seen a drop of lubricant since the car left the factory.
Swapped the battery, worked the cylinder with some lubricant until it moved freely, then walked every button on both fobs and tested the start system. Everything came back clean.
He caught the next train about an hour after I arrived. I don't think he even looked back at the car. He knew it was fine.
The dealer comparison almost didn't come up. He just said he was glad he didn't have to wait three days for a dead battery.
