A preschool director near Dizdar Park in Camarillo called me on a Tuesday morning. Her 2008 Mazda 5 had been acting up all week. Push the start button, dash says "KEY IS NOT DETECTED," and she'd have to hold the fob right up against the steering column to get the engine to turn over. I started with the fob itself, FCC ID BGBX1T458SKE11A01, the 4-button advanced key with lock, unlock, hatch, and panic. Popped the back cover and found the issue right away. One of the CR2025 battery contacts had green corrosion creeping across it. That's the intermittent part. Sometimes it made contact, sometimes it didn't.
I set up my IM508S on the OBD port, pulled the immobilizer data, and programmed a fresh smart key. Registered it to the system, erased the old one, and cut the emergency insert blade on site. Then I walked every function: lock, unlock, push-to-start from driver seat and passenger seat, hatch release from ten feet away, and the proximity detection at both front door handles.
She came out when I was finishing up. Watched me test the hatch button twice, nodded, and went back inside. No drama. Just a working key before parents started arriving.
Whole thing took about an hour, and she saved a good chunk over the dealer quote plus skipped the tow and the four-day wait.
