2011 Mazda 5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to me in Camarillo Heights?

Depends on where I am when you call and what the schedule looks like. I give you a real arrival window on the phone, not a guess. Because I'm already mobile and working the area, I'm usually faster than arranging a tow to a dealer and waiting for parts that may need to be ordered. Call and we'll tell you exactly where things stand.

Q: Can I get a replacement key today?

Most of the time, yes. I carry fob housings, the right battery, and programming tools in the van. If I have your key in stock and the schedule lines up, I can be in Camarillo Heights and have a new smart key programmed and tested the same day. Mazda dealers often can't move that fast because they may need to order the fob or schedule you out several days.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or do I need a specific blank?

This one comes up a lot. The short answer: it depends on what you bought. The 2011 Mazda 5 smart key has a specific fob with a set button configuration and an internal transponder that has to match what the vehicle's immobilizer expects. If the aftermarket fob you purchased matches the factory FCC ID printed on the original, there's a reasonable chance it'll program.

Q: One of my sliding doors stopped responding to the fob but the other still works. Is the fob failing?

Probably not the fob. On the 2011 Mazda 5, the sliding door release function runs through the door's own actuator and latch assembly, not just the fob signal. If the fob is locking and unlocking other doors and starting the car, the key itself is fine. What you're most likely looking at is a door actuator, latch, or the wiring harness that runs through the sliding door's flex point.

2011 Mazda 5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a line cook in Camarillo. He was parked in a tight alley behind the restaurant, wedged between a dumpster and a delivery van. No room for a tow truck, no way to push the car out without a working key. The dealer's response was to tell him to get the car somewhere accessible first, which was not helpful advice for a vehicle that wouldn't move.

I parked on the street and walked in with my bag.

The Mazda 5 is a compact sliding-door van. It sits low, fits in tight spots, and this one was not going anywhere until I fixed the problem on site. I connected through the OBD port, read the immobilizer data, and programmed a new 4-button smart fob right there in the alley. I tested every button, walked around the car, confirmed the doors responded, and had him do a start cycle himself so he knew it worked before I packed up.

He made it back inside before his break ended. The dealer option would have started with a tow he couldn't arrange and ended days later. The mobile route saved him the tow, saved him the wait, and cost him a fraction of what they quoted.

How long does a 2011 Mazda 5 smart key replacement take?▼

Plan on roughly 30 to 45 minutes from the time I arrive. The 2011 Mazda 5 smart key requires programming through the OBD port using diagnostic equipment. There's a security timing sequence built into the process, so it's not instant. If you still have one working key, it goes a little faster. All-keys-lost takes a bit longer because the system does a full immobilizer reset before it will accept new keys.
