How Mazda 626 Keys Evolved
Fifth Generation (GF/GW)
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your 626 uses an ID46 transponder chip inside a standard blade key with a 3-button remote for lock, unlock, and panic. The Mazda immobilizer checks that chip every time you turn the ignition, so a plain metal copy from the hardware store will not start the engine.
Which Key Does Your 626 Use?
This is a standard blade key with a thicker plastic head that holds both the remote buttons and the transponder chip. The remote handles your locks; the chip inside lets the engine start.

Common Mazda 626 Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
People assume the ignition is going bad when the 626 cranks but won't start. Real culprit is usually the ID46 transponder chip in the key head. After 20+ years those chips fail. We test, then cut and program a new key in Simi Valley or Oxnard.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
First check on a dead remote is the CR1620. The 3-button remotes on 1999-2002 models are notorious for draining batteries fast. A swap takes 30 seconds. Still no response? The remote circuit may need repair, and we diagnose on the spot.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
Daily use wears the wafers in the ignition cylinder on 1998-2001 models. Key gets harder to insert or turn, or won't engage. Mechanical, not electronic, so a new key alone won't fix it. We assess the cylinder before you spend on parts.
Can You Program a 626 Key Yourself?
Transponder key programming on the 1998-2002 Mazda 626 requires professional diagnostic tools. You cannot do this one at home. Remote-only programming is possible using a door-open method, but that only pairs the lock/unlock buttons; it does not program the immobilizer chip your car needs to start.

Did You Know?
Back in 1998, Mazda introduced its first transponder immobilizer system in the 626, and the technology was not developed in a vacuum. The system shared engineering with Ford platforms, a direct result of the Ford-Mazda alliance that shaped both companies through the late 1990s and early 2000s. That partnership is why certain Ford diagnostic procedures feel oddly familiar when you are working on a 626.
