How the Tribute Key System Evolved
First Generation (EP)
Your first gen Tribute uses a standard transponder key with a Texas 4D (4D60) chip and Ford's PATS immobilizer system. No remote buttons built into the key head on these early models. Programming is done on-board, which keeps things straightforward and affordable.
First Generation (EP) Facelift
Your 2005 or 2006 Tribute upgraded to a remote head key, meaning the lock, unlock, and panic buttons are built right into the key. Still runs the same Texas 4D chip and PATS immobilizer underneath. The styling changed, but the security system stayed the same, so programming is still on-board.
Second Generation (CR)
Your second gen Tribute moved to Ford's CD3 platform, but the key system carried over almost identically. Same Texas 4D chip, same PATS immobilizer, same on-board programming. The remote head key uses FCC ID NHVWB1U322 and still takes a CR2032 battery.
Second Generation (CR) Facelift
Your 2009 through 2011 Tribute is the final run, and the key system is nearly identical to the 2007-2008 models. Texas 4D chip, PATS immobilizer, on-board programming. The FCC ID updated to NHVWB1U432, but the process for cutting and programming your key stays the same.
Which Key Does Your Tribute Use?
A traditional metal key with a transponder chip embedded in the plastic head. Your remote buttons are on a separate fob, not built into the key itself.
Lock, unlock, and panic buttons are built right into the key head. One piece to carry instead of a key plus a separate remote.
Same style remote head key as the facelift models. Three buttons, standard blade, and a Texas 4D transponder chip inside.
Final generation remote head key. Looks and functions just like the 2007-2008 key with an updated FCC ID.

Common Tribute Key Problems
PATS Transponder Failure
First check is the transponder signal and the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. On 2001-2006 Tributes, a flashing theft light at startup points to one of those. We test both before recommending a new key. Saves you from a $40 antenna ring fix.
Key Fob Battery Drain
People think the remote is broken when it's a battery drain. On 2005-2011 Tribute remote head keys, internal transponder circuitry pulls power from the CR2032 even when buttons aren't pressed. Replacing every few weeks means the board may need attention.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
Key goes in but won't turn, or takes three tries and wiggling to start. Mechanical wear inside the ignition cylinder, common on high-mileage 2001-2008 Tributes. The wafers wear down. We repair or replace the cylinder on-site in Simi Valley or Oxnard.
Programming Lockout
A disconnected battery or failed programming attempts can lock out PATS on 2009-2011 Tributes. The dealer says the module needs resetting, and they're right, but no tow needed. We carry diagnostic tools to clear the lockout and reprogram on the spot.
Can You Program a Tribute Key Yourself?
You can program the remote functions yourself using an ignition cycle procedure, no existing keys needed. For transponder programming, you need two working programmed keys to add a third using the Ford PATS two-key method. If you have lost all keys, that is a locksmith job.
You can program the remote lock and unlock functions yourself using a slightly different ignition cycle procedure. Transponder programming still requires professional tools if you do not have two working keys.
