Saturday afternoon in Ventura, over in the Juanamaria neighborhood. A woman who sells vintage furniture at the flea market was standing next to her 2005 Mazda Tribute, one key in her hand, worry on her face. The key was worn down so badly the cuts were barely visible, and it had started refusing to turn in the ignition. I cut a fresh H86 blank on my mobile machine, matched to the original cuts before they wore down any further. Then I cloned the 4D-63 80-bit transponder chip using my VVDI Key Tool. The PATS transceiver ring around the ignition cylinder picked it up on the first turn. No rapid THEFT light blink. Engine fired clean.
I tested the new key five times in a row, cold starts, just to be sure the chip was reading consistently. Then I tested her old key too, because she wanted to keep it as a backup.
She went back to her booth. Her car sat in the same spot the whole time. The dealer would have meant a tow, a weekday appointment, and a much bigger bill. The car does not care where the key was programmed.
