A farm manager texted me a location that dropped somewhere between avocado rows outside Oxnard. His 2004 Mazda Tribute had been sitting on a gravel access road since mid-morning. The key turned, the immobilizer did nothing with it, and he had a full day of work left with no way to move the truck.
He wasn't sure when the key had started failing. Said it had been "a little weird" for a week, meaning sometimes it started clean and sometimes he had to pull the key, reinsert it, and try again. That pattern is almost always a transponder read issue, either the chip inside the key head is cracked from being dropped, or the receiver coil around the ignition is losing range. On a twenty-year-old Tribute, both are possible.
I decoded his lock cylinder on the hood of my van, cut a fresh blade to match, and programmed the replacement transponder key through the OBD port. Then I handed it to him and watched him start it himself. He turned the key, the engine came up, and he just nodded like that was the only acceptable outcome. No drama.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a tow plus a wait for parts to come in. The mobile option saved him a good chunk and kept him on the property.
