2006 Mazda Tribute Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call at 6:45 AM from a guy stuck in the Poinsettia neighborhood in Ventura. His 2006 Mazda Tribute had one transponder key, and the plastic bow had cracked clean through. The blade was still in the ignition, snapped off at the head. He tried pulling it with pliers and just chewed up the grip end worse.
He'd already called the Mazda dealer. Earliest opening was three days out, and they told him they'd need the car towed in since the blade was stuck.
I got there in about 30 minutes. First thing, I extracted the broken blade from the ignition using a standard broken-key extractor. Clean pull, no damage to the wafers. Then I decoded the lock to get the cuts, since the original key was too mangled to read. Cut a fresh H86 blank on my mobile machine right on site.
Here's where the PATS side comes in. He only ever had one key. So I connected my Smart Pro to the OBD-II port, pulled the PATS data, and programmed the new 4D-63 80-bit chip to his module. The theft light on the dash cycled and went out. Engine fired on the first turn.
He stood there holding the broken pieces of his old key like he wasn't sure what to do with them. I told him to toss them. He pocketed them anyway.
Whole job took about 40 minutes. He drove to work instead of waiting three days for a tow and a dealer slot.
