How the RX-8 Key System Changed Over the Years
Early Series I
OBD-II programming makes this one straightforward. Your 2004 or 2005 RX-8 uses a basic transponder key with an ID46 chip and Mazda's NATS immobilizer. No remote buttons built into the key head on these early models, just a standalone transponder that needs a PIN code and diagnostic tool to pair. Simple, reliable, and one of the more affordable RX-8 keys to replace.
Late Series I
OBD-II programming with EEPROM access opens up more options here. Mazda upgraded to a remote head key, so your lock, unlock, and trunk buttons are built right into the key. Still running the ID46 chip and NATS immobilizer, but the fob housing is more complex. We use Autel or Xhorse tools to read and program these without any dealer involvement.
Series II and R3 Edition
OBD-II programming is still the method, but Mazda stepped up the security. The chip changed to ID47 and the immobilizer upgraded to Advanced NATS, which means PIN calculation or server authentication is sometimes needed. This applies to both the standard Series II and the R3 Edition with its Recaro seats and lightweight package. Same key system on both, just a bit more involved to program than the earlier cars.
Which Key Does Your RX-8 Use?
A traditional metal key with a transponder chip embedded in the head. Your remote control for locks is a separate fob. The key itself has to be programmed to the car's immobilizer before it will start the engine.
Your lock, unlock, and trunk buttons are built into the key head. One piece to carry instead of two. Uses the same ID46 chip as the earlier models but in a more convenient package.
Looks similar to the 2006-2008 key, but runs an ID47 chip with Advanced NATS security. This key requires professional programming tools and sometimes a PIN code or server access. Covers both the standard Series II and the R3 Edition.

Over 1,000 five-star Google reviews say more than any comparison chart, but here are the numbers anyway.
Common RX-8 Key Problems
Transponder Key Failure
People assume the starter or battery when the engine cranks but won't fire. On the RX-8, the culprit is often a degraded transponder chip in the key head. The ID46 or ID47 weakens, NATS stops recognizing it. We test first; dead chip, we cut and program.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
First check is battery contacts inside the fob housing. On 2006-2011 remote head keys, the CR1620 terminals develop poor contact from moisture. Sometimes a fresh battery and cleaning fixes it. Otherwise we replace and program in Simi Valley.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
Enthusiastic driving wears the cylinder. On 2004-2008 RX-8s, internal wafers wear down and the key gets harder to turn. We can apply silicone spray as a temporary fix, but worn cylinders usually need repair. We handle the key side on-site.
NATS ECU Sync Loss
You just replaced the car battery and now no keys start. Not a coincidence. On 2009-2011 RX-8s with Advanced NATS, disconnecting the battery loses ECU sync with programmed keys. Full OBD-II relearn is the fix. Oxnard, Camarillo: (805) 790-8162.
Can You Program an RX-8 Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock functions yourself using a door cycle method if you have at least one working key. But this only handles the remote buttons. The transponder chip that actually starts the engine requires professional OBD-II programming. So you can pair a new remote, but you cannot make a new key that starts the car.
No DIY option here. The 2009-2011 RX-8 with Advanced NATS and ID47 chip requires professional tools for both the remote and the transponder. There is no self-programming procedure for any function on these later models.

Did You Know?
The Mazda RX-8 was the last production car ever made with a Wankel rotary engine. Mazda's Renesis 1.3L twin-rotor made 232 horsepower while passing emissions standards that had killed every previous rotary. The NATS immobilizer system was specifically tuned for the rotary engine's unique starting characteristics, which require a longer cranking cycle than a conventional piston engine.
