2006 Mazda RX-8
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for the RX-8?

You call, give me your year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the right fob and key blade for your car and give you a straight price before I head out. When I arrive, I decode or verify the blade profile, cut the key, and program the fob to your vehicle through the OBD port using professional equipment. Then I walk through every button and test the emergency insert in the door cylinder. Everything happens next to your car.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you show up?

Just the vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, your registration works fine. I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb to lock in the correct specs. If you have the original key code tag that came with the car, bring that too, it can speed things up, but it's not required. That's it.

Q: My RX-8 fob works sometimes and not others. What's usually going on?

Nine times out of ten on these, it's the CR2025 sitting slightly out of position or the contacts having a light film of corrosion. The RX-8 fob's battery compartment doesn't give you a lot of margin for a loose cell, and a battery that reads fine on a meter can still fail under the load the fob puts on it.

Q: I lost both keys to my RX-8. Can a replacement still be made without any working key?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2006 RX-8 is doable. I decode the door lock cylinder to establish the correct blade cut, then program a new fob through the OBD port. The process clears the old keys from the vehicle's memory and registers the new ones.

2006 Mazda RX-8 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy over in Pierpont called me on a Tuesday morning. Surf instructor, keeps his RX-8 parked near the beach lot, and he'd been running on one fob since he bought it used.

He finally called the dealer after a friend's fob died completely and they told him to come in. The dealer quoted him more than double what he paid me, and that didn't include any towing if the car couldn't be driven in.

He found me online and asked if I could actually come to him. I told him yes, beach lot included.

When I got there he was sitting on the hood watching the water. The car was fine, it started, he just wanted a spare before he ended up stranded. I decoded the door lock cylinder, confirmed the blade profile, and cut a matching key blade for the new fob. Programming went through the OBD port with my equipment. The whole thing, cutting, programming, verifying all four buttons and the emergency insert, ran about 35 minutes.

He had a working spare in his hand before the morning crowd hit the water. He mentioned what the dealer quoted and then just shrugged. That gap, for a mobile appointment in a parking lot, is usually what gets people to call back when something else comes up.

Mazda RX-8 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2006 Mazda RX-8 somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to you. Whether you're parked at home in Pierpont, at work, or sitting in a lot somewhere in Ventura, I can handle the full job on site. That matters more with the RX-8 than a lot of cars, because if you're down to zero working keys, the dealer requires the car in their bay, which means a tow.
