Got a call from a woman near Mandalay State Beach in Oxnard. She ran a Montessori program and her mornings started before seven. Her 2011 Mazda RX-8 had been throwing "KEY IS NOT DETECTED" on and off for a week. Some mornings the push-to-start worked fine. That is why the signal was intermittent. The CR2025 was making contact sometimes, not others.
I programmed a fresh smart key, erased the old one from the system, and tested every function. Remote lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Then push-to-start from three different seat positions because the RX-8 has antenna coils in the dash and the center console and I wanted to confirm both were reading.
She drove out that afternoon with a working key. The whole thing took about an hour, nap time to pickup. The dealer would have needed a tow and most of a week.
