So a dead battery kills your remote functions first while the car keeps starting normally. Swap the CR2025 before you assume anything else is wrong.

Q: Can I program a second RX-8 key myself at home, or do I need a shop?

You need a shop. There's no owner-accessible button sequence or ignition-turn relearn for adding a key to this system. Registering a new key requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you bought a blank fob or a cut key online, it won't start the car until it gets programmed. Bring the new key and your working original, and the job goes faster because the system doesn't need a full reset.

Out in Poinsettia, a first-year teacher had just picked up a used 2007 RX-8 from a coworker. One key, clean car, fair deal. She called the Mazda dealer first because that seemed like the obvious move.
