I was out in River Park/Wagon Wheel on a Tuesday afternoon, parked in front of a duplex on a quiet street just off the main drag. The guy who called me had an RX-8 that had been sitting in the driveway for two days.
He'd dropped the fob on the concrete and the housing had split clean along the seam. The buttons were barely hanging on and the CR2025 had popped loose from the contact.
He'd already called the dealer. They quoted him a full replacement fob and told him the electronics inside couldn't be transferred. He wasn't sure if that was true, but he also didn't feel like arguing about it.
I pulled the fob apart right on the hood. The circuit board was intact. No cracked traces, no corrosion, nothing wrong with the actual electronics. The housing just gave out from the fall. I moved the board into a fresh shell, seated a new CR2025, and snapped it together properly.
Then I walked every button, checked the passive entry on both door handles, and confirmed the vehicle recognized the fob without hesitation. The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes.
He'd been quoted a number that assumed the whole unit was garbage. It wasn't. Sometimes the job is just knowing the difference between broken plastic and broken electronics, and not treating them the same way.
