I got a call from a guy over in Pacific View who'd been parking his 2005 RX-8 in a garage and hand-locking it for two weeks. Fob had stopped responding. He figured the key was gone, the car was old, and he'd probably have to track something down at the dealer.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob and I could tell just by the rattle that the battery was loose inside. Popped it open right there on the hood. CR2025 was still in it but it had shifted enough to lose contact with one of the terminals. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2025, snapped it shut.
He pressed lock. The mirrors folded and the car chirped. He just looked at it.
Took about four minutes from the time I opened the fob to the time I walked him through testing all four buttons. The fob was never actually broken. It just needed what it needed.
He mentioned the dealer told him over the phone it would be a multi-day turnaround to order a replacement and get it programmed. That was going to be his whole week. He saved a good chunk by making one call instead.
