2009 Mazda RX-8
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for the RX-8?

You call and give me your year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the right fob and blade spec for your car and give you a price on the phone. When I arrive, I have the key blank, the cutting equipment, and the programming tools already in the van. I cut the blade, connect through the OBD port to register the new fob to your vehicle's immobilizer, test every button, and hand you a working key.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you show up?

Just the vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, your registration works fine. I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb to verify everything before I cut anything. If you still have the small key code tag that came with the original keys when the car was new, bring that too, it can speed up the blade cut. But most people do not have it anymore and that is not a problem.

Q: My RX-8 fob range got really short all of a sudden. Is the receiver dying or is it the fob?

Short range on these is almost always the fob before it is the receiver. The CR2025 in the RX-8 fob drains down gradually, so owners often do not notice until it gets bad enough that they have to be standing right next to the car to get a response. First step is a fresh CR2025 seated properly with good contact tension. If range comes back, that was it.

Q: If I buy a replacement fob online, can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech. The 2009 RX-8 does not have a DIY self-programming sequence for the smart fob. Registering a new remote to the immobilizer requires professional diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port. There is no ignition-turn trick or button combination that does it on this system. If you bought a fob online, it still needs to be programmed before it will do anything useful.

2009 Mazda RX-8 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Saticoy, I got a call from a traveling photographer who was staying at a rental near the river bottom. She was in town for a shoot and had locked her only key inside the RX-8. No spare anywhere. She'd already called the Mazda dealer in the area and they told her two business days minimum, and that was assuming she could get the car towed in first.

She had a location shoot the next morning. The two-day answer was not going to work.

She found me online and called that evening. I drove out to her rental, parked behind the RX-8, and got to work. First thing was getting into the car itself, then I pulled up the vehicle through the OBD port and got the programming session running. The fob she had was the factory 4-button unit with the flip blade. I cut a new blade on site, matched it to the locks, and ran the programming sequence. Both the blade and the remote functions tested out clean.

She was holding a working key inside of an hour. No tow, no waiting room, no rescheduling the shoot around a dealer's calendar.

She mentioned the dealer quote on her way out. I just told her to call me if she ever needed a spare made before the next trip.

Mazda RX-8 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2009 Mazda RX-8 somewhere for a key replacement?▼

No. I come to wherever the car is, a driveway in Saticoy, a parking lot in Ventura, wherever. Mazda dealers require the vehicle in their service bay, which usually means a tow if you have no working key. That tow adds time and cost before they even look at the car. I bring the cutting equipment and programming tools with me.
