A freelance designer over in the Poinsettia neighborhood in Ventura flagged me down through a friend's referral. His 2004 RX-8 needed a spare smart key and the dealer had quoted him a number that made him flinch. He figured that was the only route because of what he called "the computer chip stuff."
He was parked at a smoothie place, laptop on the passenger seat, deadline face on. Quick handshake and I popped the hood to check VIN, then got my Smart Pro on the OBD port.
The RX-8's advanced keyless system uses a Mitsubishi-based transponder protocol. The Smart Pro reads the immobilizer PIN from the keyless control module, handles the security handshake, and registers new fobs to the system. His key, the BGBX1T458SKE11A01 four-button smart fob, paired up after the timed security wait.
Whole job was about 30 minutes including the countdown. I walked every function after: lock, unlock, trunk release, panic, push-button start with the fob in my pocket, then on the dash, then in the center console. That last test matters because the interior antenna on these has a known weak spot low in the cabin.
He watched the new fob start his car and just kind of nodded, like he was annoyed it was that simple. Saved a good chunk over what the dealer wanted, and he never left the parking lot.
