2004 Mazda RX-8 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy in North Ventura, parked outside a smoothie place off Telephone Road. He had a 2004 RX-8 and needed a spare key made. He'd already called the dealer and got a number that made him pause, so a friend who'd used me before passed along my contact.
When I pulled up, he was leaning against the car looking like he was already prepared to be disappointed. He told me he'd heard "it's a computer thing" enough times that he figured he was stuck with the dealer route no matter what.
The RX-8 uses a smart fob system, the factory fob with four buttons. Getting a new key registered means going through the vehicle's security protocol, waiting out the built-in security timer, and confirming the new fob is fully talking to the car before the job is done. I walked him through what I was doing while I worked, not because he asked but because people with RX-8s usually want to know. These are not passive car owners.
By the time the security wait finished and I tested every button and confirmed the car would start, he'd finished his smoothie and was back to looking relaxed. The whole thing took about 30 minutes on site.
He said the dealer quote alone would have been a project. He paid a fraction of that, never moved the car, and left with a working spare.
