1999 Mazda MPV
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I lost all my keys. Is an all-keys-lost situation on a 1999 MPV more complicated or expensive than just making a spare?

On this particular vehicle, not really. Because the 1999 MPV key is purely mechanical with no chip or immobilizer enrollment involved, all-keys-lost just means the van is locked and there's no key to copy. The job is the same either way: decode the lock or use the key code to cut a new key. There's no module reset, no timed programming sequence, no requirement to have a working key present.

Q: Are aftermarket keys for the 1999 MPV reliable, or should I stick with OEM?

For a straight metal key on a 1999 MPV, the aftermarket question is mostly about the key blank quality and whether it's cut to the right depth and spacing. There's no chip to fail, no pairing to go wrong. A well-cut key from a quality blank works fine. The risk with cheap aftermarket blanks is a softer metal that wears faster or a blank that isn't quite the right profile and binds in the cylinder over time.

Q: My 1999 MPV key turns hard in the ignition. Do I need a new key or is something wrong with the cylinder?

Could be either, but start with the simpler answer. A worn key will develop rounded peaks on the cuts over time, and a worn key in an aging cylinder makes both problems feel worse than they are individually. If you have a second key and it turns fine, the first key is worn.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my 1999 MPV if the door locks are also broken and I can't confirm the cut?

Yes. There are a few ways to get the key code without a working lock to decode. The key code for a Mazda from this era is sometimes retrievable through the VIN via a dealer or a locksmith with access to the right code database. If that's not available, a locksmith can decode directly from the ignition cylinder or a door lock cylinder even if it needs to be removed first.

1999 Mazda MPV Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was down near Stearns Wharf with her daughter when her purse got taken right out of the shopping cart. Keys, wallet, phone, gone. She borrowed a phone from a store clerk, called her husband, then the police, then me.

The 1999 MPV was sitting at home with no key to get into it. Her husband called the Mazda dealer first. They could order a key, they said, but it would take several business days and they'd need the van towed in. The estimate they gave him was enough to make him set the phone down for a second.

I got there that evening. The van was locked and there was no key anywhere in the picture. I decoded the lock cylinder on site, cut a new key to match, and had her husband test it in the ignition and both door locks before I packed up. No tow, no waiting on parts to arrive, done the same night.

She drove home that night. The dealer route would have left them without the van for the better part of a week and cost a good chunk more.

Mazda MPV Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 1999 Mazda MPV?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. The 1999 MPV takes a plain metal key, so there's no programming involved, no scan tool, nothing electronic. The whole job is cutting a key that matches your lock. A locksmith can do that on site, at your location, without a tow. Dealers typically involve shop minimums, diagnostic time, and parts markups even on a simple key job.
