2005 Mazda MPV
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just making a spare?

On the 2005 MPV, less difference than you'd expect, because neither job involves chip programming. Adding a spare while you have a working key is easy: decode or code-cut, done. All-keys-lost just means I decode the lock directly instead of copying an existing key. It adds a small amount of time but no extra equipment, no module reset, no two-key minimum like some newer vehicles require. Get a spare made anyway.

Q: Are aftermarket keys worth it for the 2005 MPV, or should I stick with OEM?

For a plain metal key, the blank quality matters more than the brand name on the package. The risk with a cheap aftermarket blank is fit and durability: a poorly made key can feel loose in the cylinder, wear faster, or in bad cases damage the wafers inside the lock over time. We use blanks tested to fit and turn correctly in these cylinders.

Q: My 2005 MPV ignition feels stiff and the key is getting harder to turn. Is that a key problem or a lock problem?

Could be either, and the two tend to feed each other. A worn key cut can put uneven pressure on the wafers inside the cylinder, which accelerates wear on the lock itself. The 2005 MPV ignition cylinder on these is known to get sticky with age, especially if the same key has been the daily driver for two decades. First thing to check: is the steering wheel binding against the steering lock?

Q: Can I get a key made for my 2005 MPV if I have no keys and the car is not at my home?

Yes, and that's a common scenario. The car needs to be accessible and you need to be with it, or have someone there who can verify ownership. Have your ID and proof of ownership ready. The VIN is the most useful thing you can give me ahead of time: it lets me confirm the key type and prepare the right blank before I even arrive. Text it when you call.

2005 Mazda MPV Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a woman in Lemonwood on a Tuesday evening. She worked at a pharmacy, closing shift, and she was standing next to her 2005 Mazda MPV in a strip mall lot off Oxnard Boulevard. Her only key was gone. She'd checked the store, her pockets, the lot around the car. Nothing.

She didn't have her registration with her and wasn't sure where to find her VIN. I told her to shine her phone flashlight through the driver's side windshield at the base of the glass. Took her about thirty seconds. Then I had her check her insurance app, and the registration was right there.

With the VIN I already knew what I was walking into: a straight mechanical key job. No modules, no programming equipment to haul out, no waiting on a computer handshake. I grabbed the right blank off the truck before I left.

I decoded the door lock on-site under the strip mall lights and cut the key to match. Turned in the ignition on the first try. She let out this long slow breath, the kind people let out when the bad part is finally over.

She'd already called the dealer before she called me. They couldn't help her until the next morning, and she'd need a tow because she had no key at all. I was there and done the same night. The dealer route would have cost her a tow and a lot more waiting.

Mazda MPV Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 2005 Mazda MPV?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. The 2005 MPV uses a metal key, so the job doesn't require a dealer with a programming system or any special computer access. A locksmith can cut a replacement right from the VIN key code or by decoding your door or ignition lock on-site, wherever the car is sitting.
