2006 Mazda MPV
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2006 Mazda MPV actually use?

A metal key cut to the vehicle. That's it. No remote, no fob battery, no buttons. You insert it, turn it, and the ignition reads the cut - same as vehicles have worked for decades. After nearly 20 years, the MPV key blank itself can be harder to source at a general hardware store, but an automotive locksmith carries the correct blank and can either cut from a key code or decode your lock directly on site.

Q: How does a mobile locksmith compare to the dealer for a 2006 Mazda MPV key?

The dealer route on an older van like this usually means ordering the blank, scheduling shop time, and sometimes asking you to tow it in if you have no working key. That adds up in time and money even before the actual cut. A mobile locksmith comes to you - your driveway, your job site, wherever the van is sitting - decodes the lock or works from a key code, cuts on the spot, and tests it before leaving.

Q: My 2006 MPV ignition feels stiff and the key is hard to turn. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

At this age, stiffness is almost always the cylinder, not the key. Mazda MPV ignition cylinders wear over time, and the wafers inside can get gummy or corroded from years of use. A worn cylinder will make even a correctly cut key feel like it's fighting you, and in bad cases the key starts to wear down faster than normal because it's working against a dragging wafer stack.

Q: Can I get a copy of my MPV key made at a hardware store, or do I need a locksmith?

Possibly, but with caveats. Chain hardware stores can sometimes cut the blank if they stock it, but the MPV blank is old enough that availability is inconsistent. Quality of the cut matters too - a key that's off by a few thousandths of an inch will work today and start sticking or wearing the cylinder within a year. A locksmith cuts to spec and tests the key in the actual lock before handing it over.

2006 Mazda MPV Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was at the outlet area near Mandalay Beach in Oxnard when her purse was taken from a shopping cart. Keys, wallet, phone - all of it gone. She borrowed a phone from a nearby store clerk and called her husband, then the police, then me.

Her 2006 Mazda MPV was sitting at home with zero keys in the house. The Mazda dealer told her husband they could order a key but it would take several business days and they'd need the van towed in. The estimate they gave was not small.

I got out there that same evening. The job on an all-keys-lost mechanical key van like the MPV is straightforward in the right way: decode the locks, pull the correct cut, and produce a working key on site. No waiting on a parts order. No tow. I decoded the door lock, identified the cut, and had two working keys made before the police finished taking the report.

She drove home that night. The dealer wanted days and a tow. I was done in under an hour, for a fraction of what they quoted.

Mazda MPV Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does Mazda key replacement have a reputation for being expensive?▼

It depends heavily on the vehicle. Newer Mazdas with smart key systems and layered security architecture are genuinely labor-intensive to program, and dealer rates for those jobs reflect that. Your 2006 MPV is a different situation entirely. It uses a mechanical key, which means the work is cutting metal to the right profile - no encrypted handshake, no module access fees, no programming labor on top of parts. The reputation for high cost comes from newer models.
