2004 Mazda MPV
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a locksmith cheaper than going to the Mazda dealer for this?

On a 2004 MPV, yes, by a wide margin in most cases. The dealer has overhead, a service advisor, a flat-rate labor sheet, and a parts markup. A metal key job that takes fifteen minutes in a driveway still goes through that whole system. Owners of older Mazda vans who have gone the dealer route report waiting days for a parts order on a discontinued blank, then paying full shop labor on top. A mobile locksmith skips all of that.

Q: Does your price include cutting and everything else needed to get the key working?

Yes. One price covers the key blank, cutting it to your vehicle, and testing it in the door and ignition before I leave. There is nothing else to add for a 2004 MPV. No programming fees, no separate trip charge quoted later. What you hear on the phone is what you pay.

Q: My 2004 MPV key is worn down and getting harder to turn. Do I need a locksmith or can I just copy it at a hardware store?

A worn key is the worst thing to copy. The machine reads the worn profile and cuts a key that is just as wrong as the one you handed over, sometimes worse. What you actually want is a key cut from the original code or decoded fresh from the lock cylinder, not duplicated from a key that has already lost metal.

Q: I have a spare key for my 2004 MPV but it has been sitting in a drawer for years. Is it still good to use?

Probably, but test it in the door lock first, not just the ignition. Keys stored loose can pick up small dings or bends that make them bind. If it turns the door smoothly, it should work. If it feels stiff or catches, have it compared against the lock decode before you rely on it as your only key.

2004 Mazda MPV Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in La Colonia on a weekday morning, a woman flagged me down through a neighbor who had my number. Her 2004 Mazda MPV was sitting in the driveway and she had snapped her only key in the ignition cylinder. Half the blade was still in there.

She had already called a tow company. They told her it was a dealer job.

I extracted the broken blade, decoded the cut from the lock face, and made her a new key on site. No tow, no waiting room, no rental car for three days while the dealer figures out their schedule. The van started before she finished her coffee.

The dealer angle came up later, almost as an aside. She mentioned a neighbor had gone that route for something similar and waited four days. That gap between what people assume and what actually needs to happen is where this work lives.

Mazda MPV Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2004 Mazda MPV key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but it is a fraction of what the dealer route costs. For a 2004 MPV specifically, there is no fob, no programming session, no diagnostic fee. It is a metal key cut to your vehicle. Dealers sometimes bundle a simple key job with a service write-up and shop fees that have nothing to do with the key itself.
