2013 Mazda CX-9
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and why can't I just copy it at a hardware store?

The fob your 2013 CX-9 uses communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's security system to allow entry and starting. It is not a passive metal key. It contains a transponder that has to be paired to your specific car using professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. A hardware store can cut the shape of the metal insert blade that lives inside the fob, but that blade alone will not start the car.

Q: What tools do you actually use to program and cut a CX-9 key?

For programming I use professional-grade diagnostic equipment that communicates through the OBD port to register a new fob to the vehicle's security system. For the insert blade I use a dedicated pick and decoder for Mazda locks, which matters on this generation because Mazda locks use a mix of tip-stop and shoulder-stop cuts. That combination trips up generic equipment and anyone who rushes a copy without verifying in both the door and ignition first.

Q: I replaced the battery in my CX-9 fob and now the car shows a key warning. Did I break something?

Probably not. This comes up a lot with this generation. After a battery swap, the fob sometimes needs to be re-presented to the vehicle before it registers cleanly again. Hold it close to the start button or door handle sensor and try the lock and unlock buttons a few times. If the warning clears, you are fine. If it does not clear, check that you used a CR2025 and not a CR2032.

Q: All my keys are lost. Can a replacement smart key still be made for my CX-9?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a standard job on this vehicle. It takes longer than an add-a-key because the security system has to be reset before a new fob can be registered, and that reset involves a timed sequence that cannot be rushed. Plan for closer to an hour rather than a quick stop. What I need from you: the VIN, proof of ownership, and a valid ID. I do the rest on site.

2013 Mazda CX-9 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in Montecito when the call came in, maybe ten minutes from Butterfly Beach. A woman had both her CX-9 fobs go quiet on the same week. One was losing range, the other had been sitting in a drawer for a year as a spare and she had no idea what state it was in.

She had everything ready when I pulled up. VIN texted ahead, ID on hand, both fobs waiting on the kitchen counter. That kind of prep makes the job go fast. I checked the first fob: dead CR2025, contacts looked okay. Swapped the cell, tested range, touch unlock on both front handles, and all four buttons. It came back clean.

The drawer fob was a different story. The battery was so depleted the car did not acknowledge it at all. Fresh CR2025, same test sequence, and it came up fine after the vehicle relearned it was seeing both fobs again.

No programming was needed that day. Two batteries, a contact cleaning, and a full function check on both units. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a replacement fob and a programming fee. I just pointed at the two working fobs on her counter.

That is the version of the job where the answer is boring and cheap. I like those.

Mazda CX-9 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few real patterns to watch for. If they will not give you a straight estimate for your specific vehicle over the phone, that is a flag. If they show up and start working before discussing a price, that is a bait and switch in progress. Mazda owners on forums have shared stories of paying near-dealer money and getting a generic part installed, or having surprise fees added after the car was already open.
