Over near Lotusland in Montecito, a store manager at the thrift shop had a customer on hold waiting for a furniture pickup. She walked out to her 2016 CX-9, hit the start button, and got nothing. Dashboard lit up, i-ACTIV screen came on, but the engine would not crank. Just the start button blinking at her. She tried holding the fob against the steering column, which is the backup move Mazda puts in the owner's manual. Still nothing.

When I got there I checked the fob first. The CR2025 was dead, but that was not the whole story. Her second fob had been lost about a year ago and she never had it deleted from the system. She wanted a replacement programmed and the lost one erased so nobody could walk up and drive off.
I pulled the immobilizer PIN through OBD using the Autel IM608, registered the new WAZSKE13D01, and wiped the missing fob's ID from the ECU. Fresh CR2025 in the working original too. Tested passive entry on all four doors and the liftgate, ran the push-button start twice, verified the KEY ID warning was gone from the dash.
She was loading furniture into the back within 35 minutes of my arrival. The dealer had quoted her days just for scheduling, not counting the work itself.
