2008 Mazda CX-9
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you're not one of those scam locksmiths that shows up, quotes one price, and charges triple when the job's done?

Fair question, and Mazda owners specifically have been burned by this. The pattern is always the same: vague phone quote, low number to get you to say yes, then a pile of add-ons once they're standing at your car. Sometimes the part is cheap aftermarket and fails within days. Here's what I do differently. You get a firm price over the phone before I leave for your location. No add-ons at the car.

Q: Will a replacement smart key work exactly like the original, or will there be warning lights or limited functions afterward?

When it's done right, the replacement key behaves identically to what the car left the factory with. The vehicle's security system recognizes it, the start button responds normally, and all four buttons on the fob function as they should. I test everything on-site before I hand the key over, because a key that starts the car but leaves a warning light on the dash or has one dead button is not a finished job.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or do I need to buy one from you?

Bring it and I'll take a look. The honest answer is that compatibility on the 2008 CX-9 smart key system depends on the fob being built to the right spec. Some aftermarket fobs sold online list this vehicle as compatible but don't communicate reliably with the immobilizer once you get into programming. If the fob you have is the correct replacement, I can program it.

Q: My CX-9 sometimes starts fine and sometimes acts like it doesn't see the fob at all. What causes that?

Intermittent no-start on the 2008 CX-9 smart key system usually points to one of three things: a battery that's low enough to be unreliable but not fully dead yet, a contact issue inside the fob housing, or interference near where you're trying to start the car. Owners on CX-9 forums have described the exact pattern you're talking about, works fine in the driveway, acts up in a parking structure or near certain buildings.

2008 Mazda CX-9 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Her bakery opens at 6am and the delivery run starts before most people set an alarm.

She was behind the bakery in the Moorpark College Area, bread loaded, CX-9 sitting cold in the lot, and the fob had finally given out after weeks of getting flakier. Touch-unlock on the door handles stopped responding. The start button sat there doing nothing. The car had no idea she was standing next to it.

She called the Mazda dealer's after-hours line. They told her to call back when service opened at 8. She called me at 4:30am.

I was there by 5. Got the door open, plugged into the OBD port, and pulled the fob apart on the hood. The CR2025 was dead and the contacts inside the housing had a thin layer of corrosion on them, the kind that builds up slowly and finally tips things over. The vehicle's security system had stopped seeing the fob entirely.

Cleaned the contacts, put in a fresh CR2025, verified the housing seated right, then went through programming to make sure the vehicle recognized the key properly. After that I walked every function: door handles, lock, unlock, the start button, each of the four buttons on the fob. Everything confirmed before I closed up.

She was pulling out of that lot by 5:40am. Three restaurants got their deliveries on time. The dealer wasn't even open yet.

Mazda CX-9 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Mazda vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services and carries full insurance. I'm also credentialed as a Vehicle Security Professional through NASTF, which gives me authorized access to the security data and programming protocols needed for vehicles like the 2008 CX-9. Not every locksmith holds that credential, and on a smart key vehicle with an immobilizer, you need someone who has the right access and the right tools, not just a key cutter.
