Got called out to the Blanchard Community area for a 2021 CX-9 that wouldn't detect its only key. Owner tried the old battery-swap routine, but the car kept throwing "key not detected" on startup.
I pulled up with my Autel IM608 and ran a quick scan. BCM showed U3003:19-87, which is Mazda-speak for "your key signal sucks." Opened the WAZSKE13D03 fob right there on the hood. CR2025 was new but the positive contact had oxidation where you could barely see it.
Quick clean with contact cleaner, proper CR2025 install, and we tested. Nothing. Still getting the error.
That's when I spotted it: hairline crack on the board right where the battery terminal solders. Common weak point on these. Five minutes with the soldering iron, fresh solder on both terminals, reassemble.
Key detected. All four buttons working. Remote start from 50 feet away. The owner kept pressing buttons like he was testing a new toy.
Mazda dealer quoted him two days wait plus whatever their hourly rate adds up to these days. Fixed it in his driveway in under 20 minutes. No tow, no overnight, no rental car hassle.
