Near Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard, a guy flagged me down in his duplex driveway. His 2013 CX-5 smart fob had a crack running right through the seam from a drop on the concrete. Buttons were loose, the housing barely holding together, and he had it wrapped in tape like that would help.

I popped the fob open on his hood. The board inside, the WAZSKE13D01 unit with its Mitsubishi transponder chip, was fine. No cracked solder, no corroded contacts. The CR2025 was low but the internals had survived the fall. The plastic took the hit, not the brains.
I pulled the working board and emergency key blade out, moved everything into a fresh aftermarket shell with clean button pads, dropped in a new CR2025, and seated it correctly. Then the part that matters: testing lock, unlock, trunk release at distance, walking the doors, and running push-to-start twice cold. The dash accepted the key instantly both times. No "KEY NOT FOUND," no hesitation.
He stood there holding the old cracked shell, turning it over like he couldn't believe the fix was that simple. Paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted for a problem that was never more than broken plastic.
