2017 Mazda CX-5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A landscaping crew leader flagged me down near the Del Sol shopping area in Oxnard. He was at the muffler shop next door and his 2017 CX-5 smart key looked like it had been through a wood chipper. Case cracked down the seam, two of the four buttons mushy and unresponsive, and he had a rubber band holding the whole thing together. He said the dealer told him the fob had to be replaced as a unit, new programming and all.
I pulled the fob apart on his tailgate. The internal board, the one stamped with the Mitsubishi transponder module, was fine. No corrosion, no cracked solder joints. The ID49 chip tested clean with my programmer. The problem was just the shell and the button pad, both worn out from years of riding in a pocket full of gravel and keys.
Moved the board and transponder into a new WAZSKE13D01 aftermarket shell, transferred the emergency insert blade, and tested every function: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, proximity detection on both front handles, and push-button start. All good. No reprogramming needed because the guts never changed.
He stood there turning the new shell over in his hands like he was waiting for it to fall apart. It won't.
The chip inside a Mazda smart key usually outlasts two or three shells. He saved a good chunk over what the dealer quoted.
