2017 Mazda CX-5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2017 CX-5?

The smart key on your CX-5 is a fob that communicates with the vehicle wirelessly, so the car knows the key is present without you digging it out of your pocket. It has four buttons for remote functions, a small emergency insert blade tucked inside for situations where the electronics aren't cooperating, and a transponder that has to be registered to your specific vehicle through a programming process. Without that programming step, a new fob is just plastic.

Q: How long does the dealer actually take for a CX-5 key replacement?

Longer than it should. Forum threads from CX-5 owners consistently mention being told to expect one to two hours at the dealer, and that's when the key is already in stock. A lot of dealers don't keep smart key fobs on the shelf, which means you're scheduling the appointment, then waiting for the part to arrive, then scheduling again. Some owners describe it eating most of a workday. With EZ Car Keyz, the job is one visit.

Q: My CX-5 starts fine but the door handle touch unlock stopped working. Is the smart key the problem?

Probably not the key itself. If the car is starting normally, the fob is communicating with the vehicle security system well enough for that. Touch-to-unlock relies on a capacitive sensor in the door handle, and those are a known weak point on this generation. Dirt, moisture, and general wear can cause one handle to stop responding while everything else works fine.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2017 CX-5. Can new smart keys still be made, or do I need the dealer?

All-keys-lost is a standard job on this vehicle. The process clears the existing key registrations through the OBD port and enrolls the new fob or fobs fresh. The old lost keys get wiped from the system so they can't be used to start the car, which is the part most people don't think to ask about but definitely should. You don't need the dealer for this. A locksmith with the right equipment handles it on site.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy from Rose Park found me through a search on his phone, standing in a parking lot off Saviers Road with a 2017 CX-5 that wouldn't acknowledge his fob at all. He'd already swapped the battery himself. He bought the right size and everything. Still got the key-not-detected warning every time he walked up to the door.

He was calm about it, the kind of calm that comes after you've already spent an hour being frustrated and just want the thing fixed.

I pulled out the fob and opened it up on my tailgate. The CR2025 he'd put in was seated, but one of the battery contacts had a slight bow to it, barely visible, the kind of thing that looks fine until you press the battery against it and realize it's only making partial contact. I straightened the contact, reseated the battery, and handed it back to him.

He walked to the driver door. Touch unlock fired. He tried the other buttons. All four working. Started the car without touching the door handle first, just to confirm the proximity side was reading correctly.

Then I did what I always do: walked every function, both door handles, the full button set, everything. If it was going to act up again in two days I wanted to know now, not when he's calling me back.

He didn't need a new fob. He needed the fix that takes two minutes once you know what you're looking at. The dealer would have handed him a quote for a replacement key before they even opened the housing.

Mazda CX-5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Mazda dealer to get a replacement key for my 2017 CX-5?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can cut and program a replacement smart key on site, right where your CX-5 is parked. The 2017 CX-5 uses a security system that requires OBD-based programming, but that's standard territory for a properly equipped locksmith. You don't need to tow it anywhere, you don't need a dealer appointment, and you don't need to wait days for a key to be ordered in. One visit, done.
