A retired bus driver who does dialysis three times a week called me from the treatment center off South Bank in Oxnard. His 2024 CX-5 was sitting in the parking lot, and his one fob had stopped communicating with the car. No key detected on the dash, doors wouldn't respond to the handle sensors, and the push-button start wouldn't authorize. Swapped it, reseated it properly, and the range came back enough to lock and unlock. But the start authorization was still misfiring, which told me the fob needed to be re-registered to the vehicle rather than just a battery fix.
Pulled out the diagnostic equipment, connected through the OBD port, and ran the add-a-key procedure on his existing fob. The system does have a countdown built in, so we sat there for a few minutes while it did its thing. Once it cleared, I walked every function: door handles, lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, and a full start cycle. Everything came back clean.
