2020 Mazda CX-5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What actually is a smart key and how is it different from a regular car key?

Your 2020 CX-5 fob handles two separate jobs at once. The wireless remote side manages lock, unlock, and the other buttons on the four-button fob. Separately, there's a transponder chip inside that the vehicle's security system reads before it allows the engine to start. Those are independent functions. The fob also has an emergency metal blade folded inside for situations where the battery dies or the door handle sensor isn't responding.

Q: How long does the dealer actually take for a CX-5 key replacement?

Longer than you'd expect for what feels like a simple job. Owners on CX-5 forums regularly report being told to plan on a couple of hours minimum, and that's assuming the fob is in stock. Mazda dealers sometimes have to order the fob first, which means a scheduling gap before the programming appointment even happens. One owner described the whole process as taking up most of a workday between the wait and the paperwork.

Q: My CX-5 shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What's going on?

A fresh battery doesn't always fix the problem if the battery isn't seated correctly. The CR2025 in the CX-5 fob sits between two contact points, and if the battery is even slightly cocked or the contacts have a small bend from a previous swap, the fob can read as dead or intermittent. The car sees a weak or absent signal and throws a key-not-detected warning.

Q: I have one working key for my 2020 CX-5. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Get the spare now. All-keys-lost on a smart key vehicle is a longer, more involved job than simply adding a second key when you already have a working one. With one working fob present, the process is faster and less complicated. Lose that last key and the procedure changes, the time goes up, and so does the cost. A spare made today in your driveway in Victoria Estates is the cheaper, easier outcome compared to being stranded later.

2020 Mazda CX-5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Victoria Estates in Oxnard, I got a call from a guy who'd been using his CX-5's emergency blade for three days just to get in and out of the car. He was doing the deadlift-toddler-and-groceries routine out of a duplex driveway, and somewhere in there the fob hit the concrete face-down.

The housing had split clean along the seam. Both halves were held together with electrical tape when I showed up. The buttons were mushy and barely registering. He'd already called the dealer and heard a number that made him put the phone down.

What the dealer didn't walk him through was that the fob housing and the electronics inside are separate things entirely. I popped the fob open on the hood of the CX-5, checked the board and battery contacts, and confirmed everything inside was still good. Fresh CR2025, new shell, everything transferred over.

Then I walked every function. Lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, push to start from the driver's seat with the fob in the cupholder to check detection range. Doors, start, everything responding the way it should.

He'd been three days without a working fob over a piece of plastic. The dealer quote was for a whole new fob and programming. What he actually needed was a shell and a battery, done in the driveway in under an hour. He saved a good chunk.

Mazda CX-5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Mazda dealer to get a replacement smart key for my 2020 CX-5?▼

No. A qualified mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can cut and program a replacement smart key on site. Some CX-5 owners assume the dealer is the only option because Mazda's newer security architecture sounds complicated, but professional locksmiths work with the same system through the OBD port. You don't need to drop the car off, wait for a parts order, or take half a day out of your schedule.
