2000 GMC Envoy
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you wipe lost or stolen keys from my 2000 GMC Envoy so they can't be used?

On this generation of GM remote, the programming process for the fob starts fresh each session. Previously registered remotes are cleared when you run a new programming sequence, so only the fobs present during that session will work afterward. If your remote was stolen, getting a replacement programmed effectively locks the old one out. The ignition key on this vehicle is handled separately, so if the physical key was also taken, that gets addressed at the same time.

Q: Does my 2000 GMC Envoy fob have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

No. The 2000 Envoy uses a separate remote fob and a standard metal ignition key. They are two distinct pieces, not a combined flip key or a smart fob with a hidden insert. The fob handles the remote functions. The key blade is what you use to unlock the door and start the ignition. If the fob battery dies, you still have the key to get in and get going. There's nothing hidden inside the remote to pull out.

Q: My 2000 Envoy fob stopped working after I replaced the battery. What's going on?

This is one of the more common calls I get on this generation of GM remote. You pop in a fresh CR2032, nothing happens, and now you figure the whole fob is dead. Usually it isn't. A few things can cause this. The battery contacts inside the fob can get slightly bent or corroded over years of use, and a new battery sitting against a bad contact won't power the board reliably.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself to my 2000 Envoy?

You can buy the remote online, but whether you can program it yourself depends on the procedure for this specific vehicle. The 2000 Envoy uses an onboard programming sequence for the remote that does not require a scan tool, which means there is a driver-accessible method to add or re-register fobs. The sequence involves the door locks and the ignition in a specific order.

2000 GMC Envoy Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a Hope Ranch address on a Saturday morning. The owner had a 2000 GMC Envoy sitting in the driveway, one key, no spare. She wasn't locked out. She just wanted a second remote and a backup key before something went wrong, which is exactly the right time to call.

She mentioned she'd looked up my BSIS license number before picking up the phone. LCO#6792 is publicly searchable on the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services website. DOJ and FBI background checks, active liability insurance, registered business. I told her I appreciated that she checked.

Hope Ranch has long driveways and the kind of quiet that makes it easy to work. I had the Envoy's fob cloned and tested, doors responding on all four buttons, before the marine layer had fully burned off. Cut a second key blade to match the original while I was at it, so she'd have a complete spare setup.

She mentioned the dealer had given her a vague answer about availability on the remote and suggested she might just have to wait. I had what she needed in my van. No waiting, no tow, no leaving the car somewhere overnight.

GMC Envoy Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2000 GMC Envoy?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer or a tow truck. On a 2000 Envoy, all-keys-lost means cutting a new key and handling the programming sequence on site. Dealers on this era of vehicle will sometimes quote you a wait plus the cost of towing if the car isn't driveable. We come to you in Hope Ranch in Santa Barbara, do the work in the driveway, and you're back on the road before the job is done.
