2009 GMC Envoy
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 2009 GMC Envoy?

You call, give me your year, make, model, and VIN, and I confirm the right key blank and fob for your Envoy and quote you a price on the phone. When I arrive I verify ownership, pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb, cut the key, program the transponder through the OBD port, and sync the remote. I test everything before I leave: ignition, lock, unlock, and the other buttons on the fob.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Valid photo ID and proof of ownership, meaning your registration or title. That's it. I pull the VIN from the dashboard or door jamb sticker to verify the correct key specs for your Envoy. Dealers ask for the same documentation before they'll cut anything, and some will turn you away if the paperwork doesn't match the name on the ID. Having your registration in the glove box keeps things moving quickly on my end too.

Q: My 2009 Envoy fob stopped working but the key still starts the car. Do I need a whole new fob or can it be reprogrammed?

Depends on what's wrong with it. If the fob just stopped responding, start with a fresh CR2032 and make sure the battery is seated flat against both contacts inside. A slightly bent clip is enough to kill it. If the battery is fine and it still doesn't work, the fob may have lost its pairing with the vehicle. That happens occasionally if the battery went fully dead for an extended period.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself to my 2009 GMC Envoy?

Some owners on GMC forums have reported success using an onboard programming sequence for these fobs when at least one working programmed key is still present. The sequence involves the door lock switch and ignition cycling in a specific order. It does not always work on every vehicle, and it only covers the remote functions, not the transponder. If you're starting from zero with no working key at all, that onboard sequence won't get you there.

2009 GMC Envoy Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

An HVAC tech who parks in the lot near Upper State Street called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He'd been fighting his 2009 GMC Envoy ignition for a few weeks, doing the thing where you wiggle the key, wait a beat, try again.

It was getting worse. He called the dealer, got a quote for a new ignition cylinder plus a replacement key and programming, and was about two days from just scheduling it.

A coworker told him to call a locksmith first.

When I got there I could see the ignition wasn't seized, it was just sloppy and catching. The wafers inside had worn down unevenly over the years, which is common on these trucks. The cylinder itself was fine. I decoded the existing lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Then I used my programmer through the OBD port to register the key with the vehicle's security system and pair the remote back up. I pulled the old wafers out and set them on his hood so he could actually see the wear pattern.

The ignition turned smooth. The key went in clean. The remote locked and unlocked from a normal distance.

He called the dealer quote "embarrassing" once he saw what the actual problem was. I get that reaction a lot.

GMC Envoy Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2009 GMC Envoy somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. EZ Car Keyz is fully mobile, so I come to wherever your vehicle is, whether that's your driveway, your workplace, or a parking lot on Upper State Street. I bring the key blank, cutting equipment, and programming tools that talk directly to your Envoy's security system on site. Dealers require the vehicle in their service bay, and if you've lost your only key, that usually means a tow.
