Got a call from a woman near Santa Barbara City College who was sitting in her 2004 Envoy watching the SECURITY light blink on the dash. Engine cranked fine but would not fire. She had already replaced the battery in her remote thinking that was the issue.
I told her the remote and the starting system are two separate things on this truck. The MYT3X6898B fob handles door locks and the rear hatch. Starting is controlled by Passlock II, which reads a Hall-effect sensor built into the ignition lock cylinder. The key has no chip. It is just a standard cut B102 blank.
When I got there, I ran a 10-minute security relearn through the ignition. Turn to ON, wait for the SECURITY light to go solid, cycle off, repeat two more times. Three 10-minute cycles. On the fourth turn the engine caught and ran. The Passlock sensor was reading correctly; the BCM had just lost its learned value, which happens on these trucks when a battery goes dead or gets disconnected.
While I was there I opened up her remote. The CR2032 she put in was fine, but one of the contact tabs inside the fob housing was bent flat. Straightened it, tested lock and unlock from across the lot. Solid range again.
She thought the whole truck was dead. It was 30 minutes of relearn and a bent battery clip.
