She called around 8:45 from La Cumbre Plaza in Santa Barbara. Her 2017 GMC Terrain had been sitting for two hours while she ran errands and grabbed dinner, and now the key did nothing. No crank, no dash lights, no response from the push-to-start button. Just dead silence every time she pressed it.
Campus security at the nearby lot was wrapping up for the night, the dealer was long closed, and a tow would just park the car somewhere until morning. She needed it running tonight.
I got to La Cumbre Plaza and the first thing I did was check battery voltage. It was hovering around 9.8 volts, which is low enough for the BCM to get confused. I connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port and pulled the BCM data. Sure enough, the key pairing had dropped out entirely. The Continental BCM had lost its learned key ID during the voltage dip while the car sat.
I put a jump pack on the battery to stabilize voltage above 12.5, then reprogrammed her OHT01060512 flip key through the diagnostic port. Once the BCM relearned the transponder ID, I tested all five buttons, checked the remote start sequence, and hit the push-to-start. Fired right up.
She sat there for a second, like she was waiting for it to quit again. It didn't.
The problem was never the fob. It was a dying car battery that caused the BCM to forget the key existed. That kind of diagnosis is why I carry multiple tools and don't assume the first answer is the right one.
