2021 GMC Terrain Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a vet tech in Oxnard, parked outside a clinic near The Collection. She had a sick dog in the back seat and a 2021 GMC Terrain that would not respond to her fob. Push-to-start was rejecting the key entirely. She had a vet appointment across town and about 90 minutes to make it happen.

I was there in roughly 35 minutes.

First thing I checked was whether the fob backup trick worked, holding it against the start button face. It did, which told me the fob itself was alive but the car was not reading it at normal range. Pulled the fob open and the CR2032 inside was sitting slightly cocked. One contact had a faint greenish tinge on it, barely visible. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032 correctly, and tested range from the driver's seat.

That fixed the range issue, but while I was there she mentioned the push-to-start had been acting up for a few weeks and she wanted a spare key made while I was already on-site. So I ran the programming sequence through the OBD port, registered the new fob, and cut the emergency insert blade to match her vehicle. Tested start, lock, unlock, and walked all the door handles for proximity response.

The dog never left the back seat. The car never left the lot. She made the appointment with time to spare.

The dealer comment came up after, almost as an aside. She had called them first. They told her to bring it in, said they could probably get to it that day or the next. Not exactly helpful when a sick animal is involved.
